Housed in the former farmhouse of the Brotherhood Saint-Etienne’s Château de Kientzheim, the museum allows visitors to discover the many facets of the life and work of Alsace winegrowers over the centuries. This regional museum represents the winegrowing area of Alsace in its entirety. From the vine to the cellar, from the wine press to the bottle, discover the crafts and popular traditions of our ancestors, whose patience and skills created the reputation of Alsace wines today.
Wine presses, carts, vats, utensils and tools demonstrate the annual cycle of the vine and the daily or seasonal tasks of the winegrower. A vast range of illustrated documents traces the importance of the Alsace wine trade throughout Europe in Medieval and Ancient Regime.
The entire ground floor recreates a period wine cellar and houses some very large exhibits, among which are a harvest cart and two wooden screw wine presses dating from 1640 and 1716. The first floor is devoted to the tools and utensils used for winegrowing and its associated crafts (coopering and glassmaking), while the second floor recalls the viticultural and oenological techniques of the late 19th and early 20th centuries (filters, wine pumps, spigots, bottling and corking machines, etc.), as well as various methods of treating vineyard diseases.
These collections are enhanced by decorative objects relating to wine (wood carvings, ceramics, antique glassware) and illustrated by numerous photographs, posters, advertisements and labels from the past 200 years.
Museum opening times :
- In May Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays
- from June 1 to October 31: every day (10:00AM to noon and 2:00 to 6:00PM)
- At all other times of the year, group visits can be arranged by advance reservation.
The shop
The Brotherhood and Museum shop is open year-round from 10:00AM to noon and from 2:00 to 6:00PM, selling a range of books, handicrafts and selected wines.
